Greenbrier State Park Greenbrier is a beautiful state park located just outside of Frederick, Maryland. It features a lake with a small beach where you can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming. Bring a picnic lunch when you go - this park has hundreds of picnic tables all along the lake. Greenbrier has a campground which is nestled into the woods and has many cozy, private sites.

The 12 miles of trails are enjoyed by hikers and mountain bikers alike. Most of the trails are intermediate level but be aware that several of the trails have long stretches of rocky sections. The Bartman Hill Trail connects to the Appalachian Trail which passes through the park.

Gambrill State Park Rocks, rocks, and more rocks would be the best way to describe the terrain at Gambrill State Park. Most of the trails are packed with varying sizes of mostly jagged, sharp edged rocks. We recommend beginner and probably even intermediate riders put on good, sturdy hiking boots and enjoy the trails at a more leisurely pace. This is not to say that the trails are impossible to ride. Expert riders will have a great time honing their skills on the 13+ miles of challenging trails. Gambrill State Park borders the Frederick City Watershed to the north, a 7,000 acre forest which contains many more miles of trails that can be accessed via the blue blazed Catoctin Trail and the Yellow Poplar Trail.
Located on Catoctin Mountain, Gambrill State Park features excellent views of the surrounding area from several overlooks located near the park entrance. Picnic tables, play areas for the kids, and a campground at the base of the mountain can be enjoyed in the park as well.

Picnicking and strolling on the several miles of paved paths, which afford great views of the lake, are popular weekend activities. Black Hill Regional Park is easily accessible to many surrounding neighborhoods via a network of paved paths, including the 3 mile long Black Hill Trail, which snakes its way around the eastern half of the lake.
There are 14 1/2 miles of singletrack and doubletrack trails here, most of them being beginner to intermediate level. These trails are multi-use, and shared by hikers, bikers and equestrians. The Hoyles Mill Connector Trail connects Black Hill to more parks to the south and eventually terminates at Schaeffer Farms.

Little Bennett Regional Park You can spend the entire day at Little Bennett Regional Park hiking or biking the 20 miles of trails and not see the entire park. Mostly doubletrack trails, with some singletrack, this 3,700 acre wooded park has gently rolling hills, picturesque streams, and beautiful mature forests. Be aware that this park is popular with equestrians & bikes should always yield to horses.
Montgomery County has plans to enhance this park over the next few years, with a new vistor center, more trails, and additional parking areas around the perimiter of the park.

Schaeffer Farms Part of Seneca Creek State Park, Schaeffer Farm is a multi-use network of trails that is very popular with local mountain bikers and hikers. The trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate with a number of technical obstacles and stream crossings distributed around the park that will keep it interesting for everyone. The trail surface is mostly smooth hard packed dirt over undulating terrain with a few challenging climbs. Typically the trails run the perimeter of the fields offering wonderful views of the scenic pastoral farm land and open mature hard wood forests. The signage is outstanding, MORE and Maryland DNR have placed accurate trail maps at the intersections of all trails making it almost impossible to get lost inside the park. Schaeffer Farms was an absolute joy to ride and is one of our favorite parks!!! Singletrack 14 miles
Great Falls Tavern Situated along a beautiful, rocky section of the Potomac River, Great Falls Tavern is one of the 6 visitor centers along the C&&O National Historic Park. This section contains about 14 miles of hiking trails, including the popular Billy Goat Trail. As its name implies, the Billy Goat Trail is part hike, part rock-scramble along a cliff face. It has fantastic views of Mather Gorge and the Potomac River.

Special thanks to Dean and Valerie for contributing GPX data for Billy Goat Section-A and Berma Road hiking trails that are included in this map!!
