Fair Hill Information
Location:
Elkton, MD
Description:
Formerly a privately held piece of land owned by William duPont, Jr., Fair Hill was purchased by Maryland and made availabe for public use in 1975. There are now more than 80 miles of multi-use trails on this 5600 acre property, which consists of gently rolling terrain, with both wooded areas and open fields. The singletrack trails and wide farm roads on the property are popular with equestrians, hikers, and mountain bikers from both Delaware (Newark is 10 minutes to the west and Wilmington is a 25 minute drive), and also from the Baltimore area (1 hour to the south).
Having been primarily used for equestrian purposes in the past, Fair Hill houses several horse stables, areas for horse training and competitions, including the Fair Hill Race Track. Over the years, mountain biking has become popular on the property, seeing many biking events throughout the year, including group rides, festivals, and the annual Fair Hill Classic Mountain Bike Race. The Delaware Trail Spinners are actively involved in volunteering to maintain the trails there.
** Note that there are more grass track trails than what we have included on our maps. Generally speaking, most of the fields on the property have mowed paths along the edge that circumnavigate the entire field.
** Also remember to bring extra tubes due to the thorny bushes along parts of the trail

Directions:
There are several parking areas throughout the park. The Big Elk Chapel parking lot is centrally located and will get you to numerous trails. Take I95 exit 100 for MD-272 toward Rising Sun. Turn right onto Warburton Road (becomes Kirk Road). Go 3 miles, then turn left onto Hill Top Road. Go 1.8 miles, then turn right onto Telegraph Road. Go 3 miles and turn right at Gallaher Road. Go .7 miles and turn right into the parking lot. There are 2 trailheads that lead to many trails. The field to the south of the parking lot has a diagonal path through it that leads into the woods - there are many trails to choose from in this section of the park, including the "Red" trail marked with red blazes. The other trailhead is to the west of the parking lot across Gallaher Road. Once on the other side of Gallaher, you can either continue straight on the fire road and spend hours exploring the network of trails in this section, or you can turn left and follow the fire road out to the footbridge across Gallaher Road for more trail exploration.
